Outside of the Big Apple, New York is a car state. Our average household has 1.7 cars, which New Yorkers use to get to work, go shopping, run errands, and enjoy all of the wonderful things our state has to offer.
With cars, come gas stations. As a marketing agency that is located in the Hudson Valley, we’re of course partial to our Stewart’s Shops: each location is a comforting refuge from the road where you can gas up, and grab Stewart’s-branded essentials like coffee, ice cream, and maybe even some chili if you’re feeling frisky.
But we wanted to get outside of our comfort zone a little bit. Outside of our stomping grounds between Kingston, NY, Poughkeepsie, NY and Newburgh, what are the most common gas stations? Which ones are the most popular and beloved?
To find out, we used search engine marketing tools to mine Google Maps, charting out what we believe to be all 5,400 of New York’s gas stations: their locations, the most common chains, New York’s regional gas stations, and a county-by-county breakdown.
New York’s Most Common Gas Stations
According to Google Maps data, these are the most common New York State gas stations.

New York’s Ten Regional Gas Station Chains
1. Stewart’s Shops – 243 locations
It’s no surprise that Stewart’s is at the top. They have over 350 total locations, but according to our count, they have roughly 243 actual gas stations. They have award-winning milk, coffee and ice cream, and sometimes serve as a big source of grocery essentials in rural areas. They’ve made such a strong impact that they were inducted into the New York State Business Preservation Registry in 2022.

2. Kwik Fill – 165 locations
Kwik Fill, also known as Red Apple Food Mart, has over 300 locations across New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio. What makes them unique is their gas: it’s produced from American crude oil. The locations that have a Red Apple Convenience Store attached are known for stocking “Bradley Street Cafe” items like coffee and sandwiches. Their breakfast sandwiches were featured by RocFoodies on Instagram.
3. Mirabito Convenience Store – 120 locations
The Mirabito family’s energy business has been around since at least 1927, and they got into the gas station/convenience store game in the 1970s. They often get recognized for having friendly staff and clean stores and bathrooms.
4. Cumberland Farms – 89 locations
“Cumby’s” is renowned for their Farmhouse Blend coffee, which many people swear is better than what you can get from the big coffee chains. They also get a lot of play for their “Chill Zone” fountain drink area, where they encourage people to make frisky combinations like a “Dirty Dr. Pepper,” combining Dr. Pepper, a lime flavor shot, a coconut flavor shot, and sweet cream creamers.
5. Byrne Dairy & Deli – 67 locations
Bryne Dairy & Deli is known for selling milk in glass bottles, their seasonal ice cream flavors, and for their baked goods like donuts, cookies, muffins and cheesecake pumped out by their Shelby’s Donuts facility in Syracuse. One legendary favorite is their Irish mint milk that comes out for St. Patrick’s Day.
6. Fastrac – 56 locations
Besides being a gas station, Fastrac is well known for its pizza and other made-to-order items. They have large parking lots which make them convenient for travelers.
7. Dandy Mini Mart – 33 locations
While Dandy offers their own spin on made-to-order subs, pizza, burgers and more, they are also known for their “bean to cup” coffee and “good 2 go” healthy food options. They have a beloved mascot named Mr. Dandy who apparently makes appearances at weddings.
8. Delta Sonic – 26 locations
Delta Sonic’s locations are primarily car washes with gas stations, oil change and detailing services attached. Some locations even have a Brick Oven Kitchen attached. Jim Kelly approves.
9. Cliff’s Local Market – 22 locations
In Central New York, Cliff’s Local Markets have been operating since the 1980s, when they were known as “Nice N Easy” gas stations. In 2017, they re-branded to Cliff’s, providing popular made-to-order sandwiches and pizza.
10. QuickChek – 21 locations
Last but not least in New York’s regional chains is QuickChek. They’re mainly a New Jersey chain, and they’ve brought some New Jersey gas station norms into New York, like made-to-order sandwiches and wraps.
